My art has recently taken a bit of a turn. My point of view is still the same but instead of making the entire surface of my painting flat and smooth I have been incorporating more blending. There are several reasons for this but my intention was to be able to finish a painting more quickly. The flat areas of color were demanding many layers and while I enjoyed the zen feeling of repetitive layers it was just taking too long. I made the conscious decision to use more blended color.
A very interesting thing happened when I began to follow through on this intention. Yes, I was able to incorporate the mixture of flat and blended color, as well as my signature close-up point of view. The unexpected thing that happened is that my art became more emotional, more dramatic and SOFTER. As I evolve as a person and an artist, I find that I am indeed becoming softer. Over the years, my hard-ass New York attitude has been Maui-ized and is reflected by more softness in my personality and my art.
I am constantly amazed that my art reflects my subconscious mind and what state my mind is in. My inspiration is almost always found in nature. Being on Maui, I am inspired by nature and it's colors. It is so true that your mind, body and spirit are affected by your environment. My suggestion is to LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE in order to find your inspiration and to pay attention to what you are attracted to as your personality evolves. Enjoy the journey!!
